What is Protective Rhinoplasty?
Nasal ridge sparing rhinoplasty is the most up-to-date method of rhinoplasty. As the name suggests, the main goal of this method is to maintain the natural functional structure of the nose and achieve the ideal result.
With Protective Rhinoplasty, the connection between the natural structure of the nose and the goals of correcting the deformities in the nose is preserved. Problems such as bumps, arches, and curvatures are corrected without disconnecting the connective tissues in the nose. The entire nasal block is lowered until the ridge of the nose is in the targeted image. Thus, the anatomy of the entire roof is preserved without changing the main structure. However, in the protective rhinoplasty technique, using tools (saws) specially designed for this technique, the legs are cut and the belt is removed, with the cartilage removed from this area.
For whom is it suitable?
It is suitable for everyone who is in good health, who is disturbed by problems such as arches, bumps, and curvatures in their nose, and who has a faster healing process by preserving the natural structure of the nose.
The Advantages of Protective Rhinoplasty
Protective rhinoplasty does not harm the natural structure of the nose as it protects the bonds between all the components in the nose. Another important advantage is that it provides very fast recovery. The patient can easily return to work and a social environment within a few days after the operation. Very minimal pain, edema, and swelling are expected. There is no incision scar at the tip of the nose. After the operation, there is no disproportion in the nasal ridge because the patient’s natural nasal ridge is preserved. In addition, since the nasal tip is kept in motion, there are no problems such as an immobile (frosty) tip of the nose.
Since the natural nasal connective tissues are preserved, there is no drop in the tip of the nose.
Protective rhinoplasty has no known disadvantages compared to other surgical techniques. Another very important advantage of this method, due to the way it is applied, is that it also widens the nasal valve area, which narrows the air passage through the nose, thus enabling the patient to breathe better. Protective rhinoplasty is an increasingly popular method due to the advantages of rhinoplasty. It can be successfully applied by a limited number of physicians in USA.
How is protective rhinoplasty performed?
Protective rhinoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The average operation time takes 2 hours. It is applied with the closed method in which incisions are made through the nose, which prevents the formation of an incision visible at the tip of the nose. First, the cartilages are removed to correct the curved parts of the nasal midline septum cartilage, if any. Various grafts are used to fix this cartilage. Afterwards, the nasal tip cartilages are delivered and brought to their natural shape.
If there is a curvature or arch on the back of the nose, the cartilage tissues are cut and removed, the nasal ridge is corrected, and the tip of the nose is positioned appropriately. The operation is completed with a splint or splint and protective tape.
Within a week, the recovery is largely complete. During the recovery period, heavy exercise should not be done for a few weeks, alcohol and cigarettes should not be consumed for a week, and the skin should not be exposed to sunlight.
What is the difference between conservative rhinoplasty and the classical method?
In classical structural (structural) rhinoplasty surgery, the excess bone and cartilage on the back of the nose and the belt are removed, the nose is broken and narrowed, and the entire nasal ridge is redesigned in accordance with the new shape. In the protective rhinoplasty (let down), the natural nasal cartilage and bone structure of the patient never deteriorates. Instead, bone and cartilage strips are removed from the inside of the nose and the arched shape of the nose in the side view is corrected.
Today, it is a popular rhinoplasty method that gives the most natural-looking results in rhinoplasty and provides rapid recovery. At the same time, the preservation rhinoplasty technique is safer than other methods, and its long-term results are permanent and predictable.
